HEALTHY RECIPES: Jamu

If you missed my JAMU FOR YOU workshop at this year’s Ubud Writers & Readers Festival fear not! Here’s the recipe for one of the jamu that I presented, Jamu Kunyit Asem. Loaded with health giving turmeric and made from ingredients that are available pretty much anywhere.

Jamu Kunyit Asem

Makes 4 cups

400g Turmeric
150g Tamarind
4tbs Palm Sugar (or sweetener of your choice)
1.5L Spring Water

1. Peel and chop the turmeric into small pieces. Combine chopped turmeric, tamarind, and half the cold water into a blender and blend until smooth.

2. Strain the mixture into a pot. Take the leftovers in the strainer/sieve and add them to the other half of the cold water. Blend and repeat previous steps.

3. Add sugar, simmer on the stove for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.

4. Keep refrigerated.
